Call for Papers [PDF]

Researchers are invited to submit original papers that examine factors that influence the creation of a brilliant blend in tourism and hospitality studies.

This theme makes direct reference to the brand adopted by the South Australian Tourism Commission. It represents a conscious attempt to create a link with the environment and tourism products of the state that is hosting the conference. It will enable us to showcase the diversity of the local tourism and hospitality industries and the people who work, teach and research in these areas.

Use of the term Brilliant makes possible a focus on striving for excellence and visibility. This combination can be used to make scholarly outcomes more influential.

The notion of a Brilliant Blend has implications for the product and service mix that is needed to make destinations successful and to achieve optimum tourist experiences for different types of tourists.

Blending may involve tensions when alternative ingredients are advocated by competitive forces.

The theme will be used to add structure to the conference program. For instance, keynote speakers have been asked to consider the disciplinary blend that informs tourism studies and the blend between tourism and conservation.

We welcome the submission of papers that further develop some of these ideas. We believe the theme offers considerable flexibility and could be used to report research findings or discuss issues related to areas such as:

  • Tourism and hospitality studies: drawing on theories and methods
  • Tourism and hospitality experiences: mixing destination attributes
  • Communication in tourism and hospitality: interpreting practices
  • Relationships in tourism and hospitality: understanding the role of stakeholders, industry leaders and political decision makers
  • Achieving tourism and hospitality objectives: balancing ideals and realities

The organisers would welcome papers on other subjects - contact the Conference Paper Review Committee Chair, Dr Michael Gross, at michael.gross@unisa.edu.au if you have any questions.
