International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium (by invitation only) ITMI Business Meeting Ug99 Rust Workshop (with ACIAR) A new stem rust pathotype, Ug99 or TTKS, was identified in Uganda in 1999, is virulent on many commercial cultivars of wheat and capable of overcoming a number of stem rust resistance genes. Subsequently the rust has spread to other African nations and into the Middle East where it is likely to reach the wheat growing regions of Asia, raising the possibility of a major epidemic. Fifty million hectares, or potentially 25% of the world's wheat crop, is thought to be at risk with over 90% of wheat cultivars in the proposed migration route susceptible to Ug99. A mutant version of Ug99 was identified in 2006 enabling this new pathotype to overcome the widely-used stem rust resistance gene Sr24, and thus making even more commercial wheat cultivars vulnerable. This workshop is being organised in conjunction with the Australian Centre for International Agriculture Research (ACIAR) and will cover current global efforts to deal with the threats posed by the Ug99 rust strain.

GCP Workshop on Application of Genomics in Wheat Breeding
Tuesday 26 August 2008
Wheat Genetics Resources Workshop Delegates participate in identifying a number of key evaluation and characterization traits for wheat research and improvement. This is an opportunity for those seeking new genetic variation for particular traits to steer the future direction of global germplasm utilization. Delegates will also be able to register their interest in developing FIGS germplasm sets for evaluation. The Global Crop Diversity Trusts Wheat Strategy is to be further examined and discussed (available at www.croptrust.org/main/strategies.php?itemid=37). The future and arrangements of the International Wheat Genetic Resources Network, which began at 8th IWGS (1993), will be addressed International Wheat Genome Sequencing Consortium
